On XP Pro, trying to access a web page (a simple "hello world" type of
default.htm page) located in C:\inetpub\wwwroot on an XPe machine on the
same LAN. XPe PC name is "SIENNA1", at 192.168.0.100. The other, "Bigguy" is
at 192.168.0.101. Both are able to access the internet via IE6. Both can see
each other's files in My Network Places, although I have to actually log on
from Bigguy by entering a valid login to SIENNA1 using an account name and
password that has been set up. I can ping SIENNA1 and FTP to it from bigguy.

However, I cannot telnet to SIENNA1 from bigguy, nor can I see my web page,
even with the use of port 80 explicitly.

IIS *is* running. If I type http://sienna1 from SIENNA1, I see the served
web page just fine, same as if I use the explicit IP address.

I have checked router settings and also tried to explicitly allow TCP port
80 on the Sienna from bigguy (XP Pro firewall enabled). No Antivirus
software is currently running because Norton's Common Client App is crashing
all the time.

Any ideas?

Name resolution seems to be fine, and networking seems to be fine (e.g. file
and print sharing). So something else must be blocking traffic destined for
port 80 on Sienna.

A firewall of some kind seems to be the most likely culprit. If you
temporarily disable the firewall on Sienna completely, does everything start
working? If so, then this is where you need to target your troubleshooting,
since the firewall configuration is what's stopping the traffic.

I tried router settings. I turned off the XP firewall in "bigguy". I
disconnected the router and tried a hub with direct connections between the
PCs with no Internet at all. I tried two other PCs. I found some bogus
settings in the IIS setup and fixed them (now using
IUSR_MACHINENAME\SIENNA1" which is part of the Guests users. All appears
normal, but still no luck.

I think it might be a config problem in the XPe setup. I see "Connected,
Firewalled" in the network settings, but it won't let me turn it off.

If the webserver is on Sienna, turn off the firewall on Sienna. That
firewall will be blocking *inbound* connections to the webserver on Sienna.

Ken,

That's the problem - I *can't* turn off the firewall. XPe SP2 has it enabled
and it won't let me turn it off. I agree that's probably the source of the
problem since I've ruled out everything else! Don't know if the platform
builder installed it wrong, or XPe firewall can't be shut off (hard to
believe) or what.

Did a little web surfing and found an answer as to how to enable ports and
turn firewall on and off in XP embedded *after* FBA (in other words, once
received fully configured) --

from a DOS cmd prompt:

> netsh

netsh> firewall

netsh firewall> show state (lets you see what's enabled and what's not)

netsh firewall> set portopening TCP 80 MyWebPort

I tried it and it worked!
