When trying to install NNTP on a clean installation of Server 2k3, I
get an "Overlapped I/O error" which kills the setup.

This is a clean (two hours ago) installation of server 2k3, with SMTP,
POP3 and IIS installed. Nothing else has been setup.

Install NNTP using Manage Server instead of using IIS. (Seems counter
intuitive, but it works...)
