I was wondering if anyone knew of any computer monitoring software
that might be worth looking at. I am currently using BMC Patrol
which leaves a lot to be desired in terms of reliability and support.
I have a lot of experience with HP Openview which does not meet my
business needs.

Requirements:

Agent based, ideally runs as a mortal user, not root.
Server piece runs on UNIX, ideally Linux
Features and User Interface similar to HP OVO or BMC Patrol
Reliable event management database, ideally using something like
mysql
Has good security features (encryption, proxy, etc) that will make
monitoring over the Internet feasible.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Check out BigBrother at http://bb4.com - free for most users, cheap for those who it is not free for, and has a deluxe version if you want to get fancy.

Yes.

Yes, either.

Check out the demo at bb4.com and you tell me. Click on the dots; red is bad, green is good...

Not sure, flexible reporting to extract and export data. Lots of very readable shell scripts and other resources are available for it at deadcat.net

Yup.

Take a look at BigBrother - they also have a very active mailing list full of helpful folks, and an extensive (searchable) archive of same. An install from scratch should take you a couple of hours to get up and running; customized tests (CPU temperature or whatever) are trivial to add as well. Dave Hinz

Disclaimer: I am about to recommend software that I work on... If you want to watch your Oracle DBs, I/Watch - http://quest.com/i_watch If you have lots of other things, FogLight - http://quest.com/foglight I would have recommneded BigBrother (which we own too) but you want an agent-based solution. Cheers, Gary B-)

Er, what about the bb installation isn't agent-based, please? There's a BBDISPLAY host which has the webpage & database, and then for anything other than basic monitoring (ping/services/etc) there's an agent that gets installed on the system to be monitored. Maybe we have different definitions or something? Dave Hinz

The last time I looked at bb it ran shell scripts to collect data, and the agent collected the data from them and sent it, as opposed to having an agent that just collected the data and sent it. I could not look too closely as at the time bb was still owned by its creators, and I did not want to risk any copyright problems as I was working on I/Watch and FogLight. And I haven't looked since because I haven't had the time. Cheers, Gary B-)

It depends on what you're watching. If you have a custom monitoring need (say, query some process to make sure it's sane), then that's an external script which you can write in whatever you'd like (deadcat.net has dozens (hundreds?) of examples). but, the bb agent that is installed on the box then sends the info to the BBDISPLAY host for logging, alerting, and display.

Ah, yeah, sometimes not studying the other product is appropriate in one's, er, Quest for knowledge. Dave Hinz

Perhaps Nagios http://nagios.sourceforge.net/ in conjunction with net-snmp
(http://net-snmp.sourceforge.net) and OpenNMS http://www.opennms.org/ would
suffice for your needs?
<snip>
I wouldn't use reliable and mysql in the same sentence, unless there is a
negation involved.

Another suite of products to consider for sceurity would be from
www.open.com - Nerve Center, Security Threat Manager, SystemWatch, and Open
Management Console.

And yet another product to cosider is Argent (www.argent.com ...)

What are you specifically looking for in a monitoring product?
