Ah, I was missing something.
The users in the Author Rights Group that I created must only be given
permission to edit a subset of the pages in the site. By adding these users
to a Subscriber Rights Group, too, then they will have read access to all
content, and write/delete access to only that which they are assigned in the
Author Rights Group.
