I quote a recent interview of Doug McIntyre, CEO of On2 Technology:
"...Macromedia paid for the rights to distribute [On2's VP6] decoder wit
h
Flash. We retained the rights to sell the encoder. Our targets with that are
the million or so Flash developers and major publishers to use our video
compression codec. On the Flash server side, we have the codec for
compressing the video...".

What does it mean? It means Flash Player 8 lacks VP6 realtime encoding.
Flash Player 8 can only decode VP6 movies. On2 retains the rights and
revenues over VP6 encoder which will be included (probably) in the IDE, in
On2's proprietary encoding tools and, presumably, in the future Flash
Communication Server ("...on the flash server side, we have the codec for
compressing video...").

We have to use spark for realtime encoding with FP8, perhaps in the future,
with the live update feature of FP8...but for several months nothing will
change for the couple Flash Player - Flasch Communication Server

I spoke with an ON2 guy at FlashForward, who stated that there was "no live
encoder" yet, but it was going to be a focus of theirs. They'll have to
distribute installable software - I'm pretty sure we won't see live encoding
in FP8. Too bad, I'm sick of having to send 300k to get a 100k quality
stream.

I hope FCS 2.0 will include a professional live encoder, I think
this may be reasonable for its price level

The live encoder for FCS is the Flash Player, any other tools will most
likely come from third parties.

Stefan,

Both Digital Rapids as well as Viewcast have told us at the IBC 2004 they
were working on it... They both do encoding directly on the haddrive but not
directly to flashcomm. I think the dropped it (live encoding to flashcom)
because the didn't agree with the licensing-terms of MM... Hopefully FCS 2.0
licensing will change that?

Kind regards,

Mark de Jong
