Freeare/Shareware-Suggestions, please. LAN, Notebooks, |

Hello!
I have a private (W-) LAN here at home. "Contents":
2 Desktop PCs (WinME, WinXP Pro)
3 Notebooks (Win XP Home/Pro)
How can I backup the notebookfiles on one of the Desktop's-Harddisks =
autmatically? My "problem" (ist it a problem??) ist, that the Desktops =
are not always online, so that the notebooks have to "recognise" if they =
are...
Is there a freeware program for my "problem"?
Greets, Matthias

Assuming you have enough disk space on your desktop machine you can
create a folder (which ( call BU) and share it on the network. It
should be an NTFS drive and enable compression on the folder.
You can create a batch file that runs NTBACKUP and writes top the BU share.
and make an icon for it.
You can make another batch file to make ntbackup do incremental
backups of modified files on each machine betwenn full backups.
ntbackup is installed by default on any XP/pro system and can be
installed from the VALUEADD (?) folder on a XP/home CD.
Read and learn from this: http://www.taobackup.com/

I imagine I could cobble up a script that ran every minute and started
a backup if it detected a LAN connection, but IMO you really don't
want to do that. Suppose you know you are just connecting for a minute
to check your mail and then taking your laptop off the LAN. Having a
backup start would be a PITA.
Think about what your critial files are and how to recover them. It
can be as simnple as emailing files to yourself as attachments so they
are on your email servier until you delete them.

It is more costly than you probably want to hear, but a standalone NAS drive
will give all your machines a place to back up to. It sits on the network
(cat-5 cable to your router) and powers down when not being used. Mine is
250GB and was about $200.
And then you'll need software to make it happen...others here will have to
chime in on that...
