Hi.

P690 is a IBM server, as we know. This is a power 4 system. On its own,
its just a P690. However, we can do additional stuff like

1) adding lpars to it
2) together with other p690s, we can have HACMP, hardware clustering on
it

?

I don't see the question. If I'm supposed to grade your
test, you didn't make any mistakes so you passed.

Okay.. let me try again.

what i meant is that p690 on its own is a IBM power 4 server. However,
we could tap on the features such as lpar, hardware clustering with
more of the p690s if we have more p690s?

You can LPAR without any more p690s; LPARs divide the resources of a
single machine into multiple images. It doesn't combine resources from
multiple machines.

You can run HACMP with multiple p690s if you wish.

And, for future reference, HACMP doesn't require a specific Power
processor.

If you want to work on LPARs you need to work within the
same physical box. Adding more P690 boxes does not mean
you can add hardware from one box to an LPAR on another.
The biggest LPAR you can have is one entire box.

Software clustering with HACMP does not care about the
hardware. "Hardware clustering" isn't to be confused
with LPARs. HACMP works among booted hosts no matter
what box they are in. "Hardware clustered" hosts within
the same box just have better channels to HACMP
communication to happen on than "software clustered"
hosts that use ntwork heartbeats.

Just to clarify a point that I think has caused confusion. In English,
"we can" and "we could" are declarative phrases, stating that "we" have
the ability to do something. "Can we" and "Could we" are interrogative
phrases, asking if we have an ability.

I don't want to be Mr. Mean-Grammar-Pants, but it seemed important for
future reference.

Nick
