Websphere MQ is built on MQ Series messaging, which is an excellent,
Java-server based, multi-platform messageware solution using both directed
messages and publish and subscribe with workflow. It is a fairly mature
product with excellent throughput. By combining MQ Series messaging and
WebSphere EAI, you have a fairly powerful solution. (There are probably
notable items that I'm missing).

Biztalk is a "younger" product. Now entering it's third major release,
based on .NET, Biztalk is scalable, highly integrated with the Microsoft
platform, and not difficult to learn or maintain. With Microsoft's strategy
of aligning with a wide variety of "adapter" companies, Microsoft is able to
offer the same platform breadth as MQ Series (especially since MQ Series
messaging is one of Biztalk's adapters) and can integrate with a wide
variety of formatted data types, including X12, HL7, and EDIFACT.

With both, you get reliable messaging and good mapping and formatting
options.

I am not able to compare prices. I don't know if pricing has been released
on Biztalk 2004 yet, and I know that IBM is getting aggressive with
Websphere MQ as a way of increasing market share.

One thing to consider is your environment: If you are comfortable in a
Javaserver environment and have Java developers on staff, and/or have a MQ
Series messaging already in place, and/or need to integrate, in real time,
across more than three or four platforms (IBM Mainframe, HP-UX, and PC/LAN,
for example), Websphere MQ is fairly compelling. If you are essentially a
Microsoft shop, and have a wide variety of applications on servers on the PC
platform, can work out the multiplatform issues with an adapter, and have
skilled people already in place using Visual Studio tools, Biztalk is the
clear winner.

Both are good tools.

I hope this helps,
