Anyone know why Stomp is offering a free upgrade to their new version of Bac
kup My PC, which happens
not to be backward-compatible with previous versions?

I'm just a little skeptical -- there must be a catch!

Is this new version no longer based on Veritas Backup Exec? Is it for bette
r or worse?

Thanks,
joelk

I would guess that:

1. They want to enoiurage folkes to stick with BUMP rather than moving to a
competitor's product.
2. I believe BUMP has been included in Roxio's Easy Media Creator since
version 7.5 of EMC, so in some sense lots of folkes may be getting BUMP free
anyway.
3. Might mean that version 7 is soon to be announced and they wish to get
folkes to v 6 to ease migration to v 7.

A lot of software has been bought up by Sonic. Including Roxio, BUMP and
maybe all of STOMP, and parts of Seagates and HP's (formerly
ColoradoMemorySystems) back up solutions, especially those that ended up
Veritas including Prassi. Veritas seems to have sold off everything except
the corporate level programs to them. I forget who else was in the mix, but
for awhile BUMP disappeared with the swallow up. Now looks like that site is
fully up, but who's product is it? Sort of like when GE swallowed RCA. Only
if you knew the history and looked closely could you tell if buying an RCA
was an RCA or was it a GE. Vice Versa as well.
I had hoped that everything would become more standard and as consumers have
less headaches with such a move. But I have seen indications that they may
be more concerned about licensing and wouldn't be surprised to see separate
licensing required to move your UsB device to another machine, someday.

BUMP is now part of Sonic, which also bought Roxio, and included BUMP as
part of Easy Media Creator 7.5.
Might also be in EMC 8.

Roxio does have a web forum for discussion of BUMP in for EMC 7, 7.5, and 8
at http://www.roxio.com/en/support/dis...ion_menu.jhtml.

Has anyone ACTUALLY INSTALLED this upgrade and can comment on how it
compares with the older versions of the Backup My PC software?
