I must have been looking the wrong way ...
... for a means to do file versioning NOT based on a CVS, but VMS style as
part of filesystem control.

Please point me a good place to look at,

Z Shell (zsh) "VERSION_CONTROL=numbered".

Check the archives of zsh-users mailing list and zsh documentation.  I
use zsh but don't use numbered version control so can't help further.
