I'm experiencing a very wierd problem with (presumably) the SMTP server in
my Windows 2003 Server setup.

I've set up my domains and mailboxes in the POP3 manager, and can receive on
all of my mailboxes. When I reply (or send), however, only one account
works. The messages seem to send, I get no error messages, and they show up
in the "Sent Items" folder in Outlook Express. However, they never reach
their intended destination. They never bounce back, either, though they may
do so some time in the future.

The account that works (joe@befumo.com) is in no way different than any of
the others. It was not the first account I created. I get the same behavior
whether I set it as the default in Outlook Express or not.

Here's the wierdest part -- I used to have Windows XP on this machine, and
tried installing Ipswitch iMail on it, and experienced the exact same
problem. This is a clean install of Windows 2003 Server. I'm hence inclined
to believe that the problem may be external to this machine -- maybe in my
(Netgear) firewall?

I'm utterly mystified. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Joe

Have you checked the logs yet? See anything in there?

In event viewer? Or is there somewhere else I should look?

Thanks.

The SMTP logs which should be in the same directory that you put the IIS
logs. Usually %systemroot%\Logfiles is the directory.

UNBELIEVABLE!

I just tried removing email services and reinstalling it.

Now I can SEND from any of my mailboxes, but mail sent TO them vanishes into
the ozone!

Is Win2003's email service reputed to be stable? Perhaps I should try using
Exchange instead? (I'd REALLY like to avoid that option if possible).

Thanks.

Joe

Nope, not a thing. Now, in fact, I'm not receiving mail either. If I send
from Yahoo to my accounts, it doesn't arrive, nor does it bounce back.

Is there any possible way this could be caused by some setting at my isp
(DSL)? I though it might be their DNS servers, but yesterday I tried all of
my mailboxes, sending from yahoo, and every one worked fine.

Stable is a relative word, but it should be better than you make it sound.
This is computer science, so the data doesn't just disappear for now reason.
There's a reason, but we don't yet know it.

Just clarify: this is SP1 of W2K3 right?
As for your DSL question, your ISP may very well block the mail from
traversing their network. You'll have to check with the ISP to see their
policy.

As for the email, have you checked the badmail folder?

I'll have to check with my isp.

Yes, SP1

There was a slew of stuff in the bad mail folder, but nothing I could easily
identify as mine.
