Hello all,

I know these get posted all the time (I've read a number of the threads
here and elsewhere before posting), but I need help interpreting the
IISState log, as this is very new to me. I can see the thread #'s
where the User times are high, but cant tell much else about the source
of the thread/what it's doing.

Periodically my web server will hover at CPU usage of about 50-75%,
w3wp.exe being the culprit. On it I have an ASP .NET web app that runs
against an MS SQL DB. I also have a Windows Service that runs and
periodically makes calls to a copy of one of the .dll's used in the ASP
.NET app, but I assume that would not be being handled by the w3wp
process. I'm trying to figure out what is wrong, i'm assuming it's
something in my code but have no idea where to start looking.

Any help would really be appreciated. I've attached a copy of the
IISState log run against the w3wp process.

Thanks,
Thom

Here's how you want to think about this.

1. Since your issue is not a crash, IIS State cannot catch the crash and let
the system point to an immediate culprit
2. Since your issue is not a hang, IIS State cannot pinpoint the exact
thread and what it is doing when "hanging"

All you are saying is that "periodically, something will cause your CPU
usage to be higher than normal", and you want to find out what is causing
that. Well, it then makes sense that you want to take the IIS State log
during those time periods. And realize that since this is a snapshot and
that computers run really, really fast -- so millions of instructions can go
by in a single second and the CPU-utilization culprit may be gone in between
those times -- so you really need to sample a couple of times and wager that
"statistically, the culprit is likely to be running during this time period,
so I take several sample snapshots and hopefully it is active in one of
them".

I wonder if you are somehow causing the ASP.Net application to recompile or
GC constantly, which would drive up CPU utilization. because otherwise, your
snapshot doesn't show a whole lot going on inside the w3wp.exe other than
point to a lot of managed code has been running and taking up CPU time to do
so... which is not much more info that what you already known. It doesn't
mean the tool is useless; no tool can solve all problems; it is the art of
debugging that you need to know to truly get to the bottom of these things.

Thanks,
Thom

Thanks for your reply. Yes I understand the point about culprit may
not be active at the moment I take the snapshot. I have a couple of
Q's for you though.

1. How could i be causing the app to recompile by way of user
interaction. All my code uses the codebehind files and I was under the
impression that once it was compiled and run, that is it, no more
compiling.

2. I dont have any code that should be taking more than maybe 30-60
seconds to execute. Is there any reason i would have managed code that
has been taking up minutes of CPU time ASIDE from faulty CPU hungry
code? What I mean is, it's not normal to have user time of say 2, 6,
or 12 minutes for threads using an ASP .NET app is it?

3. When you mention causing GC constantly, how would i be doing this?
Do you mean direct calls to the GC object to clean-up (at least i think
i remember reading somethings about this)? I'm not doing this, however
i have a DBHandler object that stores all of my DataSet tables (which I
use quite extensively, lots of tables, basically load the entire DB
table structure into this). I call .Dispose on this DBHandler rather
often which disposes of the connectin, dataset and adapter used to fill
the dataset. Could this be causing trouble?

4. How extensively is the DataSet intended to be used. As I mentioned
I use it quite extensively to load all the values for all of my lookups
in the DB as well as loading all data related to a single case, and
also to fill some report query type tables with data on multiple cases.
Is this too taxing on the system?

I used to have memory usage issues on the server. I tried correcting
them by re-using objects such as the DBHandler from Case page to Case
page and disposing of objects in the event that i knew it may not be
used on the next page. After I did that the memory issue was gone and
the CPU issue appeared...

Again, your help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Thom

It looks like thread 36 is using the most CPU - copying a string from
.Net-->COM, which is a relatively expensive operation but is OK so long as
it is not abused. You may be able to track down the issue using a profiler.

Pat,

Thanks, I'm not sure exactly what in my app would be using COM (not
entirely clear on the COM concept). The main part of the app is ASP
.NET pages written with C# and makes occasional calls to old poorly
written VB code ported VB .NET dll. Both of these interact with the
SQL DB, C# uses SqlDataAdapters/etc. and the VB .NET uses OLEDb.

I also have a windows service running that makes much more frequent
calls to a copy of the same VB .NET dll, but as I said before I was
under the impression that wouldnt be running within the w3wp process,
though i might be wrong.

Do you know which link described above would be using COM? Also, what
kind of profiler do you mean?

Thanks for your quick reply,
Thom

Hard to say where the calls are being made. It could be some of the VB.Net
code making some calls into legacy code.

You can use the CLR Profiler:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...
ethowto13.asp

Or there are several others out there (Intel's V-Tune, multiple OSS
projects, etc.).
