I might be doing some digital video editing to bring into my Flash
files, I had been getting by with the limited features that come with
Flash MX 2004 Pro, but obviously I need some serious software to do the
real stuff.  Particularly, we are going to use a video producer to shoot
some chroma-keyed actors in front of a green screen and then use the
editing software to insert the background or alpha channel it out for
Flash.

I am thinking I should get the Adobe Video collection that includes
After Effects and Premiere.  Are there better suites out there?  I know
the video collection (Pro) edition is pricy, but my company will go for
it if we win this video work.  Or should we choose another product?  I
must run on Windows XP, so I assume the Apple products are out.  How do
the Sony products compare (like Vegas Video?)

I used to use Premiere way back in '98, and it was pretty easy to use -
I'm sure its much more complicated now.  Am I going to be good to go
with the Adobe Video Collection? I'm sure there will be a learning
curve, but I'm only going to be doing intermediate level stuff.

Also, I have Flash 8 Pro, with that and the Adobe Creative Suite, do I
really need any compression software like Sorenson or Media Cleaner?

I have worked with, avids, video toasters, premiere, beta test a dozen
other but I have settled on Video Vegas.

Vegas started as a audio mixing program and video was added latter.
Which is important for .....smaller the screen size the more important
audio becomes.  I find the learn curve for new editors is  small.  And
the video features of the program matches that of Final Cut over on the
mac side.(Another great video program).  Time shifting, drop in
transitions, chroma key, contrast key, and alpha channel manipulation
all come standard.  The scan and pan functions are good  and now with v6
3d  scaling has been added. The best thing is to download a demo and
give it a wirl. It is an addictive piece of software.

It's remarkable in that you can bring ANY flavor of video at ANY resolution 
and it will output to ANYthing else.  MPEG1, MPEG2, WMV, QT...all in the sam
e timeline.  Sad to say we have to do that on occassion, but it is possible 
with Vegas.
 
I'm not overly fond of the GUI, but the engineering team from the former Son
ic Foundry is the technically best in the business.  They know more about WM
V than Microsoft.

I have a license for Cleaner, so that's never really been an issue for
me. ;-)

It is a huge time saver, though, to not have to do any conversions
before bringing sources in. Frankly, I haven't used it extensively for
video, I started using it back when it was strictly an audio app and just
kept upgrading it. Does it let you control external decks?

No problem with DV via firewire.  With other formats I'm unsure.  We ingest 
tape principally via FCP on Macs.  We use Vegas as a Swiss Army Knife, takin
g disparate digital files and combining, editing, and recompressing them.

Hi Merril,

Just to answer your sidenote about compression. On2 indicated that the FL=
V
encoder that ships with Flash 8 only does one-pass encoding, while their
compression suite will do 2-pass (the same will go for Sorenson). 1-pass
encoding is not shit-house, but at the end of the day, I suppose it depen=
ds
on your quality needs. I'm guessing that a compression suite from On2 or
Sorenson will give you a few more encoding options as well.

We're using Sorenson atm, and it is extremely useful because it can encod=
e
and decode to/from almost any format. It also allows for batch processing=
,
which, for some reason, makes me sleep better at night 

If you capture to MPEG, I also highly recommend you download a trial of M=
PEG
Video Wizard [www.womble.com]. Play around with it and you'll discover n
e=
w
features all the time. It's light-weight, and super-fast in reading/writi=
ng
MPEG [1&2].
