OT: Which esternal disk drive is RELIABLE?

I am in search of an external (USB or Firewire) disk drive to use for
backups. I have read so many complaints about dead disk drives on
Amazon.com that I'm wondering if this class of disk drive is even suitable
for backup use.

Judging from the complaint stream, Seagate seems to have a slight edge.

I also found a brand "Kangauru" that provides a carrying case with every
drive. This is a big bonus for me, because I take my backup media offsite
on a regular schedule. I speculate that the protection offered by a well
made case would increase reliability.

What is your choice for external disk drives?

I have a Western Digital 80GB USB2 drive I've had for two years now and
do weekly full image backups to it and it has worked flawlessly

I think the main problem is that many of those were built for a price
point (and thus typically found on Amazon) and thermal considerations
were ignored.
