I posted this on inetserver.misc and then found this newsgroup. Please
forgive the cross post...

I've got a customer server with multiple websites on it; the one utilizing
Front Page server extensions has a problem. There are several pages on this
site where the user fills out a form and submits. On the submit action,
however, I get the follow error....
FrontPage Error.
User: please report details to this site's webmaster.


Webmaster: please see the server's application event log for more details.

There's nothing in the server event log; I've even checked the event logs in
c:\windows\system32\logfiles and there doesn't appear to be any specific
event (or non-event) to point at. I've done the tests in Microsoft article
828909 and they all point to a successful install. I suspect it's a
permissions issue vis a vis the shtml.dll in  _vti_bin but don't want to
monkey with the permissions yet...Anyone give me a clue? TIA...

One of the most common issues could either be a) security settings on the
file or database that the form is trying to save results on or b) (which
happens more often) the form is set to send an email but the SMTP server
information has not been set. In the case of the SMTP server not being set
this can be done through the properties of the FP Server Extensions for the
web.

I should have mentioned, there is another site on the server that uses IIS's
email function regularly, and it works fine. I also had our customer create
a form with a submit button that sent the data to a text file, and we got
the same error. I should also mention the site was originally published to
another server with FPSE installed but which I'm pretty certain was using
Apache 1.3 as a http server. Also, the engineer who built this web server
had some permissions issues creating folders for this and the other site
that our customer could publish to from their LAN; that is the sites were
visible via the web browser but a network user couldn't publish to it. Hence
my suspicion it's a permissions issue...

Responder's advice was "In the case of the SMTP server
not being set this can be done through the properties of

would you explain where and how to implement this? Thanks
