Did you get an answer to this question?

There is an option in Tools->Options->Job Defaults->Backup to force
Hardware/Software or No compression. Check this value. If it is set to HW
and your not getting the compression you think you should, download the
latest drivers from the Veritas website. BE will not compress the data
unless the drive indicates that it supports HW compression during the
backup.
