I tried a coupld of the progrms you all suggested and
decided on Double Safety. It seems the simplest. But
all of them caused my system to shut down because of
excessive heat. Any suggestions? Repair shop here I come...?

If you feel comfortable opening the box yourself, you can give it a
cleaning.  Dust build up on fans, filters, and heatsinks, can cause
overheating.  Watch out for static while cleaning, since lots of PC
parts are sensitive.

Is your processor heated or your hard drive? Maybe the fan is out of
order.
