Heres my situation. I have the document root set at directory
/var/www/doc on my Linux server's /dev/hda device. I have another
filesystem mounted at /var/www/doc/private that is on a separate
physical disk and is /dev/hdb. I can secure other directories within
the document root no problem, but when I try to apply basic
authentication on this directory I get prompted for a password twice,
then get a access forbidden error. /var/www/doc/priv is owned with rwx
by the apache user. So I would love to know what I am doing wrong.

Operating System is Mandrake Linux 9.2 (PowerPack DVD if that
matters).
Apache is Advanced Extranet Server (Mandrake Tweaked) 2.0.(47 I think)

which won't display the error messages the way I want...

It would be nice to see your httpd.conf or .htaccess in the relevant
part.

The error message have to be longer tha 512 chars, otherwise it won't
be displayed correctly.
