Hello all,

I am trying to get my network adapters working on my Old Toshiba Tecra
8000. Most of what I am trying is done via the terminal windows. When I
shutdown and restart, from what I can tell I am only given the option to
boot into Gnome/Nautlius. I would like to figure out how to boot into
Terminal as ROOT for the mean time.

If you use Lilo, you can type "linux single" at the boot prompt; or
you can let it boot into Gnome, and then press ctrl-alt-F1 to get to a
console (alt-F7 to go back to the graphic screen); or you can "apt-get
remove gdm", and type "startx" when you want to go into graphic mode; or
you can rename /etc/rc2.d/S13gdm to K13gdm...

Hi,

If you are already in GNOME and want to switch to console,
in your xterm type:    /etc/init.d/gdm stop
