If you use Lilo, you can type "linux single" at the boot prompt; or
you can let it boot into Gnome, and then press ctrl-alt-F1 to get to a
console (alt-F7 to go back to the graphic screen); or you can "apt-get
remove gdm", and type "startx" when you want to go into graphic mode; or
you can rename /etc/rc2.d/S13gdm to K13gdm...
