I know this is a discussion that occurs often, but I was hoping for some
recent opinions.
How has everyone solved the lack of a built-in paging system for CM?
Are you using separate hardware? RJ-45 ceiling speakers? software which
broadcasts audio from your cisco phones?

Thanks,
Avidan

We have a closely associated group that uses the Berbee product. While in ge
neral it works, there are concerns with how it is setup. Basically, you call
a number and then that number calls you back and then you speak. The dial b
ack is causing problems whereby if they happen to miss the call and it goes
to voicemail the prompt is played across all phones. Also, the IP speaker su
pposedly does not have trunking capabilities and therefore requires direct a
ccess to the voice network. Two issues you should consider.

I'm of the school of thought that says use a product for what it was used fo
r. I'd say install an amp and some speakers. ;) By the time you get the RJ45
cables installed and you've paid for all the switch ports and you've got yo
ur network multicast ready, is it really worth it?

Most of the folks I've worked with use various legacy?
paging units from valcom, etc that connect with analog
FXO or FXS ports to gateways, ATAs, etc.

I am aware of a product from Cistera that broadcasts
pages to phones, and also has hookups to go to
directly to overhead speakers without need of legacy
analog paging equipment. You then could page to both
IP phones and/or the overhead speakers from IP Phones.
It had groups/zones and permissions so you chose the
group you wanted to send to, etc.

You might want to try SynApps' SA-Announce:
http://www.syn-apps.net

It can page through cisco IP Phones and legacy analog speakers. You just
dial a number, enter the security code (if any) and it will page your
voice across the members of that group. Busy phones are not paged.

Besides that, it can do:
- Hoot-n-Holler (dial a number and have it autoanswer on speaker)
- Walkie Talkie (bidirectional page)
- Text messages broadcast

We use the IPcelerate appliance for IP phone paging. We also purchased
it because it has some other apps that we wanted. Requires multicast,
but since we already had that set up for other reasons that was not a
big deal. In locations that had an existing AMP/Speaker setup, we
purchased a Valcom V-2000A unit (about $130). This allows for EASY FXO
integration to the AMP.

We are using the Berbee informacast. In a school setting it works
pretty well. I really like the bell scheduler and the IP Speakers. The
only complaint I have is that it's not in real time. The ad-hoc message
records your message, then opens multicast, then plays, so your looking
at some time before it plays. I would really like Berbee to open
Multicast port and talk real time. I haven't seen this anywhere yet.

Scott

PS. Other then the real time thing, we really to like Berbee.

You could do the same thing using E&M ports in a multiservice router with
voice DSP. Hook the E&M port to a 70-volt transmission line speakers. Set
your E&M port to LMR signaling (so it will auto-answer calls) and assign it
a DN. When you want to send out a paging message, call the DN of the E&M
port, speak your message and then hang up the call. You lose the
flexibility of having individual addressibility of IP-enabled overhead
speakers, but it works and it's cheap!

A voice-enabled 2621XM can be had for well under $3,000 these days.

We use a Valcom Analog Paging adaptor hooked up to an FXS card in a 3800
series router. Assign an internal or external DN to the FXS port and
there you go. It is simple, inexpensive, real-time and it works great. I
have several branch sites with this implemented.

Syn-Apps' SA-Announce is real time. It uses multicast to multicast enabled
phones, and unicast to phones without multicast capability:
