i'm trying to restore an ext3 partition from a ghost image of an entire hard
drive. i select the source partition and the destination drive, but when i
try to select the destination partition, the one i want is disabled. i'm res
toring from an image that was made from the same hard drive as i'm trying to
restore to and i haven't changed any partitions. i've done this before with
no problems. i'm using norton ghost 2003. to check the size of the partitio
n's i began the process of doing an image from a partition. here's the parti
tion info that ghost reports:

Part Type ID Description Volume Size Data Size
Label in MB in MB

1 Primary 0c Fat32 BIGFAT 19775 16313
2 Primary 0c Fat32 SMALL FAT 3004 1487
3 Logical 83 Linux extd 5726 5556
4 Logical 83 Linux extd 392 62
5 Logical 82 Linux swap ex 250 1
6 Logical 07 NTFS extd NT40 4000 1102
7 Logical 07 NTFS extd Windows 20 2000 952
8 Logical 07 NTFS extd No name 2000 1805
9 Logical 0b Fat32 extd MILLENNIUM 2047 757

Free 8
Total 39205 28039

the partition i'm trying to restore is number 3. the data size for this part
ition in the image is approximately the same as shown here. is assume the re
ason has to do with the size of the partition but i have changed the size si
nce i created the image. anyone have any ideas? thanks

My superficial reaction is that it may be getting confused by a very
full partition, getting confused about whether it will fit into the space
available, even when it came out of that space in the first place.

The latest Ghost 10 does support the older image files, so it may be
worth trying the Ghost 10 free trial and see if it will restore that partiti
on.

thanks for the reply. i wasn't able to find a demo of ghost 10. i managed to
solve the problem by restoring the partition from the image to a different
hard drive and then using the redhat rescue disk to boot into a temporary sy
stem and reformat the target partition and restore the contents from the sec
ond drive using tar. a bit more work than i had envisioned but it worked.
