I'm about to take on maintenance of an existing site which is hosted with
FrontPage extensions turned on.

Previous webmaster created and maintained site using FrontPage.

Site will remain hosted in same place.
I expect to maintain site with FrontPage2002.

What are my options in most easily copying all the website files to my
computer?
A. download the files from host to my computer using FTP?
-----I know not to UPLOAD with FTP, but don't know if prohibition is only
one way.
B. Or, is there something within the FP app that I can execute to do the
download?

I'd prefer CD because this site is very large but don't know if previous
webmaster will be cooperative. Need to contact previous webmaster about
several turnover issues, but would like to minimize my requests of his time.
Will be first contact and person is 500 miles away.

The site is very large and is for a non-profit and previous webmaster has
done the maintenance pro-bono (but not very effectively since moving so far
away from our organization).

I do have FP experience from having created web sites, but I have no
experience of RECEIVING turnover of an established web site. And the FP
how-to books and sites seem only to address creation issues rather than a
situation like this.

Since the site is running on a server that has the FP extensions, DO NOT use
 FTP!

Open the live/remote site directly in FP via File Menu | Open Web and either
 double clicking on the
site in the dialog (if using the same computer as the previous webmaster) or
 type in the URL as
http://www.domainname.com, then enter login info, click Ok, then click Open,
 then you use File Menu
| Publish Web and either point to the existing location (if using the same c
omputer as the previous
webmaster) or enter path or http://localhost/subwebname it working with a lo
cal IIS web server with
FP extensions.

Thomas,
Thanks for your advice but in following it I've not been able to download
the files.

1) I'll not be downloading to the same computer as the previous webmaster.
2) Not sure about the local IIS web server reference for this situation.
3) I have FrontPage 2002.
For sites I have created/maintained in the past the files have resided in a
"My Webs" folder (and of couse sub-folders).
For these sites I am able to do
-- File/Open Web
-- see "open web" dialog open
-- enter "http://www.domainname.com" in field called "web name"
-- click OPEN
-- see "Connect to www.domainname.com" dialog open
-- in dialog enter "User Name" and "password" fields.

But when i attempt to do this for "http://www.newest_site.com"
I get the following error message
"The folder "http://www.newest_site.com" isn't accessible. The floler may
be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password or the
filename contains a / or \."
this occurss after clicking "open" so the "Connect to ..." dialog hasn't
even displayed to give me th opportunity to enter "username" and "password".

For this newst site I've not yet created a file folder.

Hope this is clear.

Try opening it by browsing to it in IE and using file Edit w/ FP
- if you can't have the host check the FP SE
