I moved them using a ZIP drive.  (My old computer was very, very old...)
I've checked the files and they don't seem to be set for "read-only" or
"hidden." There are two exceptions, both in the _vti_pvt subfolder.  Two
files -- deptodoc.btr and doctodep.btr -- are both set to "read-only." Could
this be the source of my problem?
