Hi,

I recently moved all my web from Windows XP Profession to Windows XP MCE.
Now when I try to open my default web using FP 2003 to access either the roo
t
web or any subwebs I get the following error.


"Could not find a Web Server at 'cobblestone02'. Please check to make sure
that the Web Server is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If
you are sure that everything is correct, the Web Server may be temporarily
out of service."

In order to get access, I have to open the Microsoft Sharepoint Admistrator
Internet , select the Adminstration link for the Default web and then select
"Upgrade virtual server with FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 " .   After
this task is completed the web and all sub webs can be opened using FP 2003.
HOwever, once I close down FP 2003, I have to repeat this process.

Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Last time I checked the MCE didn't support IIS.

Thomas A.  Rowe,

I am surrpirsed to see your response since I have Windows XP Pro MCE running
IIs with a problem.  However, the  problem seems not to be with IIs but with
the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions.  If Microsoft did not intend to have
IIs running on a MCE then they should have shared that information with  OEM
s
who installed on their computers (Gateway and Dell) and microsoft customers.
Many purchased the MCE systems because MCE came installed with Dual
Processors.  Please direct me to a place on Microsoft web that confirms your
statement that MCE 2005 does not support IIs, as my next step will be to ask
for a refund from  the computer company and/or replace MCE with the just
Window XP Pro.  I will also prepare an article for the media so the public
can be better informed.  Adobe/Macromedia Dreamweaver and the new Intel MAC
is looking beter all the time.

The issue came up early last year when a friend was purchasing a Dell comput
er, he was looking to
purchase a Dell MCE, but it appears to not come with IIS, which is required 
for the FP extensions.

Looking on the MS today, nowhere does it mention that it come with or withou
t IIS. However, if the
more features and functions rely on .Net, then I can see it coming with IIS.

Here is what I found on Microsoft's site about MCE:

MCE2005 is essentially Windows XP Pro (minus domain join/cached credentials)
with Media enhancements.

Windows XP Pro comes withs IIs  ( MCE includes Windows XP Pro) and Frontpage
2002 Server Extensions comes with Frontpage 2003.   If IIs is not istalled
when MCE is installed it can be installed from the Control Panel.  Likewise,
Frontpage 2002 Server Extensions can be installed from Frontpage 2003 CD or
downloaded from Microsoft.  Obviously, if one is not running web sites
created by frontpage with components the need for server 2002 extensions are
not required nor are they desired.   But all this rehetoric has has not
addressed my original question.  Perhaps, someone else would like to help.

My FP 2003 CD's do not come with the FP 2002 server extensions.

FYI:
FrontPage 2003 doesn't come with any run-time extensions.
The FP extensions are now part of the IIS install package.

Ok, back to your original issue, now that you have made me aware that MCE ve
rsion is based on
Windows XP Pro.

1. Uninstall IIS and the FP extensions.
2. Reboot / Scandisk / defrag.
3. Install IIS and the FP extensions from the Windows MCE CD
4. Configure the FP extensions for the default web under IIS MMC.
5. Make sure you can access the default web via http://localhost or http://machine
name.
6. Install any new windows updates.
6. If you can access the default web, then open it and create a folder for e
ach web site that you
want to work on, right click each and select to convert to subweb / subsite.
7. Then open your live/remote site and publish a copy to the specific subweb
 / subsite.

Then once you are sure everything is working correctly, then if you want, yo
u can upgrade the FP
extensions.

Ok, whatever.  My point is the IIs does come with MCE, which negates your
first rsponse to my orginal question.  Can we get back my original question
and get an answer.  If  this is beyond your expertise stop responding and
wasting my time reading the obvious.  If you have some expertise to share
regarding my origninal question, fine.  Love to hear from someone who can be
of some help.
