I'm getting a compile error with latest stable release 3.1.4 from the
configure script.

$ ./configure
[....]
checking for Py_NewInterpreter in -lpython2.4... yes
checking what libraries Python was linked with... -lpython2.4
-lpthread -ldl  -lutil   -lm
checking linker flags used to link Python...
checking where Python include files are... -I/usr/include/python2.4
./configure: line 2951: syntax error near unexpected token `('
./configure: line 2951: `as_me=`(basename "$0") 2>/dev/null ||'
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

Line 2951 from ./configure file is:

# Name of the executable.
as_me=`(basename "$0") 2>/dev/null ||
$as_expr X/"$0" : '.*/\([^/][^/]*\)/*$' \| \
X"$0" : 'X\(//\)$' \| \
X"$0" : 'X\(/\)$' \| \
.     : '\(.\)' 2>/dev/null ||
echo X/"$0" |
sed '/^.*\/\([^/][^/]*\)\/*$/{ s//\1/; q; }
/^X\/\(\/\/\)$/{ s//\1/; q; }
/^X\/\(\/\).*/{ s//\1/; q; }
s/.*/./; q'`

I am running Arch Linux with most recent packages. I have no clue what
the code from the configure script is trying to do. Any suggestions how
to get this to compile? Is it possible the latest version of bash is
breaking the script?

Thanks,
Casey McGinty
