Hi all,

I have a client who wishes to run a system that can do the following on
his Solaris, SunOS 4 and Win2k boxes (150+ hosts):

a. Execute batch jobs, i.e. backup and database cleanup scripts AND
monitor these.

b. Systems monitoring like HP OpenView/Sun Management Center/TNG/etc etc...

Conditions which should be met:

1. The system should run on a central server, preferrably a unix host.

2. The relevant batch jobs are situated on the local host, but executed
from the central server or the central server tells the local host to
run the job.

3. It must be possible to execute a main job which then starts several
smaller jobs. If one of these smaller jobs fails for some reason, it
should be restarted up to 3 times before an error message is sent to the
sysadmin/monitoring system.

4. The job-execution on the hosts shall be visible graphically on the
central server (or on a client machine).

5. It has to run on both *nix and windoze systems.

So, any ideas anyone?

I'm thinking about bcnu (bcnu.sf.net) or nagios (nagios.org) with some
extra facilities. It doesn't _have_ to be Open Source though. My client
has their own software maintenance and development department, so they
can do quite a bit themselves.

We get asked this on an almost weekly basis, check your news cache or
google for more, but...
We're using a hybrid solution of nagios, big brother (bb4.com) and HP
Openview.  It's working well for us; nagios for internal monitoring,
BigBrother for external monitoring, and HPOV for network and notifications.
Eventual plans may include moving more of what HPOV does to either BB or
Nagios, but in our case it's a "social inertia" thing.
