My new computer, using Win XP, doesn't have a zip program. I used to get
"pkzip" or "winzip" free program for simple zipper jobs. Is such a program
still available and can someone tell me how to get it?

Thanks.

WinXP will unzip and zip files. You don't need a 3rd party program unless yo
u
need really fancy capabilities. A zipped file should look like a folder in X
P.
Just click it to open. To create a zip file... right click somewhere and cho
ose
"new" / "compressed folder". Then drag files into that folder. That folder i
s
then a zipped file.

Get winrar from rarlabs.com . It does much more that zip. If you are
spending any time in the binaries newsgroups then you will need it
anyway. WinXP has "compressed folders" which are zips.

I've been using CAM Unzip for a long time, much more user-friendly than WinZ
ip.
However, I've been sent a couple of program patches lately from Europe which
have a .rar extension. CAM Unzip doesn't do RAR, so I've downloaded and use
d
WinRAR which is an excellent program, but it can only be used a limited numb
er
of times before you must buy it. That's ok if you're using it for more than
just unpacking. Then this thread produced TUGZip which is free, and replace
s
CAM Unzip as well. It's a great program that's easily configurable and work
s
automatically.

Thanks for that.

Thanks to all that responded to my post. Lots of very good suggestions. Also
didn't know that WinXP will zip - maybe that's all I need.

The only big issue with ZIP files is their size limit.

http://winzip.com/wzdic.htm

Anyone know if the newer, 64bit extensions to the ZIP format are widely
supported? Or are they proprietary? (Sounds like InfoZIP is planning
on large ZIP support in v6.)
