Folks,

I am curious to see if anyone has tried the following configuration
and if so, what the outcome was (success/fail):

(1) 7206VXR with NPE-G1 (1GB memory)
(4) PA-VXC-2TE1+
(1) PA-MCX-8TE1+
(1) PA-MCX-4TE1+

.. as in an alternative to using an AS5400 with T1 or CT3 interfaces
to the PSTN.

Thanks in advance,
-Tom

7200VXR as SIP-PSTN Gateway
Yes, it is possible.

I have been using a 7206 with a DS-3 port attached and a set of SIP trunks c
onfigured to the IP "side".

I've used 7200's as voice gateways before. They can be unreliable at
times. I've always leaned towards the AS's because they seem to do
voice extremely well.

<META name="rant" content="extremely biased opinion because I've had a bad
week with cisco gateways">

<rant>
I've worked with 7200's and the voice PA's several times.

1. The voice PA compared to just about any other voice platform seems way
overpriced (unless they brought the price way down). The last time I
checked, the DSP's were also fixed (as in not upgradeable in the event you
have high DSP needs).

2. The last time I put a 7200 in (about a year or so ago), H.323 did some
rather odd things at times (like not send out proper H.245 messages). I've
also had in the past codec negotiation problems, horrible audio problems, PA
crashes, bus errors and more I can't remember. Now admittedly, I've never
done SIP with a 7200 so it *might* be better.

3. The 7200 seems to lack any truly useful working commands for monitoring
your ports compared to even the lowly VG200 (as in some of the commands are
there, they just don't work right). The AS series servers give you a
million stats on your T1's and T3's. Not to mention the AS servers are
blazingly fast at call processing.

Lastly, I've had many a discussion with Cisco's CSEs in the voice arena
(Consulting SE's), and I've yet to find one that recommends using a 7200 as
a voice gateway - except as a last resort.

Now I will caveat this with the fact that I've not touched a 7200 as a voice
gateway for at least a year, possibly more. Sometimes I've been surprised
when something gets fixed. I've just learned to not get my hopes up.

</rant>
