How do typical backup programs handle files that have been backed up but the
n
deleted from the original hard drive? For example... my backup program backs
 up
my entire drive C. Subsequent backups only backup files that are new or have
changed. I then delete files on my drive C. What if anything happens to the
backed up versions of the files I deleted? Are typical backup programs smart
enough to delete those deleted files from the backup so they are not restore
d in
the event I do have to restore my C drive?

In a somewhat typical situation: You'd WANT TO bave a backup of and
restore a file you deleted. Backed up files should remain backed up.
If a backup program was stupid (not smart) enougk to delete all of its
backups of files which no longer esisted then you'd really have a
problem. Perhaps if you said what program you are using...

Yes, it does make sense that you would want the capability to restore a file
 you
deleted by mistake. I was just wondering about this behavior. I am using
Retrospect Express that was bundled with a NAS drive but I have never been a
ble
to get it to work right. That's another issue.
Thanks for your reply.

Relative Rev Backup from http://www.datamills.com is incremental
forever software that is smart enough to restore to the desired time
point as if you were restoring from a full backup image. That means
that if some files were delete in the time point you want to recover,
they will not get restored.

Relative Rev Backup
Backup and restore from incremental disk archives that go hours or
months back

Not all backup solutions cant handle this. Example Veritas BackupExec cant
handle this,
but Netbackup can through "true image backup" option. Tivoli also can do the
same.
But both cant delete added files after last incremental. Before restore you
must manually delete all
files from C. The only software that can delete also files from C drive is
Dantz Retrospect - it restores to
exact snap.

Any good backup program will do the right thing.
Take a look at Retrospect (www.dantz.com).

Relative Rev Backup will also delete files added after the last
snapshot, if you ask it to do it.
