I would like to get an official response as to the future
of the 2002 extensions. What are the plans for future
support, when is end of life, will sharepoitn services
support all of the functionalility that the 2002
extensions
support? I feel for how we have them implemented at our
organizations, shairpoint services are over kill compared
to what we need from the FrontPage extensions. Any one
have any reesponse?
Thanks,
Rick

Rick,
I think the extensions have pretty much gone their development
route. From now on I would only expect to see maintenance releases to fix
bugs and/or security issues because of the way that FP 2003 now uses web
parts with Windows SharePoint Services and such.
As to when the life of the extensions will end, who will know. It
will probably be a long, long time since they come in both Windows XP Pro
and Windows 2003 Server. The SharePoint Team Services are pretty much a
superset of the FP Server Extensions, essentially they just add a bunch of
extra features for collaboration. The Windows SharePoint Services though
have a different model and some of the FP Server Extension features won't be
there anymore or have been changed. I don't think anything official has been
really said, other than there will be no further FP Server Extensions built.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for the response. In our current install we have
2003 server with FPSE 2002 that ships with 2003 server.
We have been using FPSE since they first came out later
95' to support easy web development for our users. From
the easy form creation to submitting to database, it was
easy to teach and it was easy for the end user to utilize.
It was a great way to get non-web users utilizing and
creating online content. The SharePoint services do not
support most of the items that our end-users want to use.
SharePoint is obviously aimed for more group collaboration
and doc sharing than for creating personal web content.
The new release of SharePoint for 2003 server is overkill
for our needs. The version of 2002 extensions that came
with 2003 server are exactly what we need to continue.
Microsoft needs to continue to offer the FPSE environment
for those who do not and will not need the type of group
collaboration environment that SharePoint services is
aimed to serve.
Lets face it. There are users that need an easy to use
application like FrontPage and the support on the server
side like the extensions to enable the end user to create,
edit, deploy and manage web content easily. The FPSE that
shipped with 2003 server offers this environment. The new
SharePoint product for 2003 server does not.
With SharePoint going in a different direction and not
offering a lot of the resources that the FPSE offered like
counters, form submittal to access databases, and other
core items that make web development easy for the end user
we are beginning to look at other solutions that may be
available.
I hope a Microsoft rep reads this and can comment and
understand that, although SharePoint is a powerful
collaboration tool, we still need a powerful server side
supporting app like the FrontPage Extensions available as
well along with an app like FrontPage.
Comments? anyone else agree?
Thanks - Rick
