I dont know much about unix, but could someone tell me what advantages
do the directories have over the file in unix??

That's like asking for the advantage of a box over a sheet of paper.

Thanks a lot. It was my first day in class and the prof asked me why is
it better to handle your assignments in a directory rather than a
file...thanks for the help.

well, a directory is basically the same as what's called a folder on a
mac, or called either a folder or a directory on windows.
