i am able to access internet via firefox under ubuntu linux but gaim,
bittorrent, irc etc fail to connect. is there any help for this?

yes pinging via terminal works fine.

You need to tell us the exact error messages. Also run iptables-save to
see if any filter rules are the reason. Try to connect to Port 6666 on
some irc server using telnet. Does that work?
