I Would like to know that can we configure WebSphere Portal Server 5.1 to us
e an existing Websphere Application Server 6.0 both installed on a different
 machine.

If yes can you please also help me with installation guide.

make sure install required fixes/fixpacks before installing portal software.

WAS 6.0 is not supported for WPS 5.1.  You must be on at least 5.1.0.1  to g
o to WAS 6.0.0.2.  Also there are required fix packs for WAS 6.0....
