Urgent: Need Shipping Box for Sun 24.1" LCD Display |
 |
 |

I'm needing to track down a shipping box for a Sun 24.1" LCD Display
(X7134A). I recently purchased several of these displays for new
workstations and threw out all the boxes once the systems were
installed and tested. Then one month later, one of the engineers
decides to move to another state, so I need to ship the workstation and
display to the other office. The shipping department and myself are not
comfortable shipping a $3,000 LCD display in packing peanuts.
Sun doesn't sell replacement boxes for any of their systems and the
company they referred me to for replacement packaging doesn't make
these boxes/inserts any more. They are waiting to hear back from some
of their past customers in an effort to buy back some of the old boxes.
Hopefully someone has a box for one of these displays that they could
send me. I'l pay for all shipping costs and throw in a nominal PayPal
payment for the trouble of shipping the box to me instead of pitching
it in the trash dumpster/recycling bin. Please contact me via e-mail if
you have one of these boxes, or via the newsgroup (for future reference
on Google) if you have leads on where I could purchase one of these
boxes.

Take it to the local UPS store along with a laptop and video adapter,
demonstrate to them that it is in working condition, have them package it,
take a photo or two of the progress during packaging and the condition of
the box before shipping. Then insure it for $3000 when you ship it with
them. If it get's broken you have documentation of it's condition before
shipping. Also make note of serial numbers....
Seems pretty simple.

Agreed - although personally, I'd recommend Fedex over UPS. My
wife works for Mailboxes Etc., and she has LOTS of UPS horror
stories...

I received the same suggestion in e-mail, which sounds like a good way
to proceed. Thanks for the messages. I'll take the display to a
shipping store 1 block away from work tomorrow to get the display on
its way. Looking at FedEx.com, it looks like a two day delivery (for
Monday) should cost less than $100 for the packaging and shipping
charges.

You can try a company called Heritage Paper (used to be called Mark Containe
r) and ask for Tina @ 925-449-1148, X480, although they might not be able to
help you in a very expedient manner. They are the manufacturer for Sun for
most of the original cartons and can often sell you replacements.
We ship Sun product every day and Fedex is our preferred shipper. That said
, big monitors are easy to damage and freight claims are tough to collect on
. Insurance companies don't become wealthy by making it easy to collect fro
m them, you know?
Good luck.

I had called Heritage Paper (I couldn't remember the name for them when
I made the original posting) and they weren't able to help. They were
between production runs and it would be several weeks before I could
get a box. There was a chance of getting a box purchased back from one
of their past customers.
When I had finally received word back from Tina about the possibility
of this happening, I had already shipped the display. It arrived at the
remote development site in fine shape, although the box was trashed.
One edge of the box had been totally split open and was close to
leaving a trail of peanuts as the delivery guy wheeled it into the
office. Luckily there was no damage to the display inside the box. It
caused quite a comotion when I unpacked the display since all displays
in the remote office are CRTs and the largest one I saw was a 20".
I've been told we need to get two more workstations for new hires at
our main office. These will be ordered with the same displays, so I'll
be sure to save at least one of these boxes for future shipments.
Thanks again for everyones comments.
