I'm looking into obtaining new backup software for my PC.  I have a
standalone PC with a harddrive divided into 3 partitions.  I currently
use PC Backup (formerly BackupMyPC) from Stompsoft, but am not
entirely satisfied with the new version (some functionality and
capabilities removed!).  I don't do a lot of disk imaging, just backup
all files and folders to an external harddrive on a regular basis.

Can anyone  recommendation other software products for me to take a
look at?

I've been using Retrospect for what seems like about five years.

I'm not in love with the product or the publisher.   The menu system definit
ely
isn't something I would have designed and the publisher doesn't put out bug-
fix
releases.

Having said that, the thing keeps on chuggin' along and, besides a better UI
, I
can't think of anything more I'd want in a backup utility.

Hi Charlie,

I use three products, and like them all.

AutoSave 2.0 from V-Communications. See
http://www.v-com.com/product/AutoSave_Home.html. It backs up new and changed
files to any device automatically as they are created or changed. I use this
to back up files while connected to the company Network Attached Storage (a
Buffalo LinkStation) during the day. It logs changes when I am not at the
office and therefore not connected to the NAS.

BounceBack Professional. See
http://www.cmsproducts.com/product_...k_software.htm. When I get home
at night I plug my CMS external hard drive into my laptop and BounceBack
launches and does a complete backup with no intervention. This would be a
good solution for you with your external drive. Use it either in automatic
or manual mode. I like the Professional version, not the basic version that
ships with many external drives.

Norton Ghost, from Symantec. Each weekend I do a complete imaging of the
drive to an external drive. I also use Norton GoBack, which allows me to
recover from crashes, bad installations, etc. It is a wonderful product that
has helped me many times. It has a great feature that allows you to install
and test software, and then either accept or reject the changes made to your
computer. (I used that feature this weekend to recover from the installation
of Nitro PDF, which for some reason disabled my CD-ROM drive. It made a mess
of my computer, and all I had to do was a couple of clicks in GoBack to
restore the computer to the state it was in before I installed Nitro PDF. It
is wonderful software.) See

All three products allow me to restore a single file or a complete backup.
(And GoBack recovers the entire drive.)

None of these products has ever caused a crash, nor have any failed during
backup. I have never had to do a full restore, so have never had to test
that capability. But I have recovered individual files from both AutoSave
and BounceBack. I helped my son (over the telephone) through a complete
restore of his drive using an image created with Norton Ghost. It worked
successfully for him.

I was reviewing Norton Ghost on Symantec's site and see they have a
similar program in Norton Save & Restore.  Do you know the difference
in the two program - sounds almost identical!

Charliec, Norton Save & Restore was just announced and supposed to be
available at the end of March.  It looks like Symantec took Ghost 10
and added a file backup feature to the existing Ghost 10 image backup
capability.  Since the suggested price is about the same, it appears
(to me anyway) that Ghost 10 will probably be the last Ghost release,
and Ghost Save & Restore will take over in the future.

I downloaded the 30 day trial of BounceBack to try it out.  Install
went well, but major problems were;

- Not being allowed to determine where I wanted the program installed.
Not being given a chance to outline what I wanted to back up, as soon
as I launch the program, it scanned the drives and went into a full
backup.  I thought, well, maybe the first time out, they set a
framework.  Next time I launched the program, same thing - no chance
to set the options/configurations I would like, except for the
targeted drive (my external F drive).

- I have 3 partitions on my internal drive and it backed them all up
to my external drive, but the wierd part is, it put all the details of
the C drive on my F drive as if creating an image of it (other backup
programs create a compressed file containing the details), so the F
drive is an image of C (along with all the other stuff I have on it,
could get very confusing!).  It create something called F:\Drive D &
F:\Drive E on the F drive for the other two partitions, but they are
not viewable from My Computer, I guess only from BounceBack Restore
function (something I did not know before uninstalling BounceBack).
Deleted everything from F and attempted to reformat, because concerns
as to what was still there, and could not - it said programs where
still using files (had to go into Safe Mode to reformat and restore
order).

Apparently, I probably did not fully understand how this program works
(did read some of the notes and stuff), so probably took some steps
out of order.

Any thoughts?

Many people use AJC Directory Synchronizer to backup to a USB drive.  This
gives you a lot of control over what is going to happen and you can schedule
it too.  What's more it can keep archived copies in a compact revision
control system so you can get older
copies back if you made a mistake.
