The cisvc.exe is started under services.
the check box for "Index Service" is checked under add/remove programs.
running Windows 2000 server.
asp.net 1.1 framework
MDAC 2.6

Under task manager i see cisvc.exe running.

I never see cidaemon.exe running??

Please help.

cidaemon runs when there's something to index

The problem is the cisvc.exe service is running, but when I query the
index service I get the error "service not running". It looks like the
cisvc.exe file may have been changed. the version of the file I have is
5.0.2134.1 and the size is 1 MB.

I checked another system and the ver. of cisvc.exe is 5.2.3790

My understanding is cidaemon runs whenever you have created a catalog. There
should be one cidaemon process for each catalog.
