Just curious and had to start somewhere so here's the question:
Is there a way to block a search say with google to find information such
as names etc that might appear on webpages that you don't want to appear
in a search. Ex: My name is John Doe. I want to keep it from showing up
on the web pages it might be listed on. Can it be done?

With creative HTML, yes.

I think it’s something to do with exclusions in “robots.txt,” though some le
ss popular se’s don’t honor them, or so they say.

So it depends of the se, and if your “john doe” is listed on any other sites
besides yours, and maybe other more technical considerations that only SEO
experts might know the answer to.

I bet if you ask your question in alt.internet.search-engines, you will have
 better luck.

Yes, by using Robots.txt. Google claims to honor it. A couple examples
can be found at

Only if you control the website it's listed on -- then you can use
robots.txt, which google respects, to limit the pages it will index.

There's no technical way *you* can keep google from indexing pages on
*my* website, however. You'd have to ask (or sue!) me to handle it
the way you want.

Use graphics instead of text. iow, make a picture of it and name it wisely.

Thanks to all who responded. Good ideas. I had forgotten about the
robot.txt method. Did some google and hope it's solved.

Try a "robots.txt" file on your web site
