We've backed up religiously for years, first to CDs and now to DVDs.
We have a large collection of old backups that need to be destroyed.
Is there a recommended procedure to make these writable CDs and DVDs
guaranteed unreadable?

Acetone seems to work well, our forensics can't raise a reflection
after acetone is used, but it is very OSHA unfriendly.

Also we have a huge number of out-of-date subscription software (like
MSDN) and need to destroy these pressed media as well. Is there any
accepted procedure?

Any direct experience will really help. Thanks.

Rock

There are shredders out now that will handle CD's and DVD's. Other than
that what about sandpaper?

CDs and DVDs are easy to break, as the media won't bend much.

While sandpaper may work for CD's since the data is on
just under the protective coating on the top, DVD's are
a sandwich of two 4mm lexan disks with the data in the
middle. Much harder to sandpaper. Definitely go the
shredder route.

It's funny, but the DOD (Dept of Defence) have several standards that
apply to exactly what you are asking. The bottom line, absolute secure
method?

1. Shred <.5cm square pieces

2. Embed with silica 20:1 ratio

3. Inject into 2000° F for 10 minutes

4. Do step 1 again

Step 3 is not to melt the silica but to embed it into any remaining
pieces of CD that have survived. Making them unreadable with any
optical devices

More than you asked for but interesting non the less. How does your
government spend your tax dollars? Cloning? UFO research? No matter
who it is spending or how they spend all governments waste money,
that's the nature of the beast.

if it hurts... take a pill!
