I'm having some problems installing WPS v5 on Redhat Linux v8.
Everything starts fine, it gets to prompt me for CD1-2 (certain
components of WAS for Linux) but almost immediately prompts me for the
next CD1-6, appearing to have done nothing with the contents of CD1-2.
It carries on anyway, but after a few minutes, the install dies and
refers me to the install log.
The install log complains that the appserver\bin directory doesn't
exist, which it doesn't. So, for some reason, somehwere along the
line, it has decided not to install the WAS components.
Has anyone experienced these symptoms before ? My previous Windows
installs have been fine but I'm a newcomer to Linux.
Appreciate any comments or help.

In the initial cloudscape install cd 1-2 is not needed (at least on
windows). are you using physical cds or are the files on a network
drive? If the latter run the installer on cd2 and use a directory
structure similar to

\portal_v5
\cd1-1
\cd2
etc

other layouts may work but i am sure this one will

It's is using CD1-2 in order to install the WAS server - I've tracked
down an error saying 'a suitable JVM could not be found' - it seems
like the Java\bin directory in the install CD doesn't even have a JAVA
executable. I tried replacing with my own Java directory contents but
no luck.
Why is it that IBM seem incapable of packaging a product correclty -
they make assumptions about what is already installed on the machine
but decide not to tell us what those assumptions are. I have spent so
much time on this !

I had bad out-of-the-box media as well, I downloaded all the images from
developerWorks and made a DVD with all the files on it. worked great.

I downloaded the images - and I don't think the problem is missing
files or bad media. It's complaining about an unsuitable JVM - as if
the one on CD1-2 is different or it can't find it - but it is there.
I've got to the point where I'm just going to give up - if IBM can't
package their products properly, I'm not going to spend days of my
time doing their job for them ! I've seen similar issues with WPS v4 -
it seems that they just about managed to package v5 for Windows in
time, but the rest got neglected.

there must be some solution to this problem. there have been successful
installs of portal v5 on linux. if it's a jvm problem and there was one
installed with redhat, try removing the os-installed jvm and let the
portal cds install the one it wants to use. if you made physical cds
were they made on a windows system?

I used a clean-install of Redhat - i.e. there was no JVM on the
machine (I tried fixing the problem by putting one on after, but that
didn't work).
I downloaded the files, expanded them and cut them to CD on a Windows
system, the contents certainly seem to be readble by Linux (i.e. I
copied the contents of a CD onto the Linux hard drive). Do you think
this could be a problem ??

yes, it could. the contents may be readable but linux (like unix)
recognizes mixed case filenames while windows does not. in addition,
there could be a missing symlink that is supposed to be present but is
not on the cd set (since windows has no knowledge of them, as far as i
know). i am not saying that either one of these is your problem but they
are possibilities. if it were me, i would uncompress the linux images on
a linux system and try installing from those or burn the cd on a linux
box

Well -  the tip about expanding the Linux install files on the Linux
machine, not the PC has certainly made a big difference and the
install progessed much further (to the install WAS section). Thanks a
lot !!

I since had a problem because it had detected an unclean previous
install, so I'm cleaning it out properly before trying again but I
reckon it will work.

Once I have a final result, I will post it in the thread on Google for
other people.

One point: I assume that I don't have to 're-package' the
windows-based CDs (i.e. SETUP, CD2) ? just the Linux ones ? as I have
all of the Windows install cut to CD already

If you made cds for windows on a windows system then i would say no
repackaging is required. i did not make cds for my windows install (i
used the unzipped images mapped on a network drive) but i can't see why
they would need to be remade
