Are there any large (at least 250GB), decently priced USB powered Only
external hard drives???

I'm looking for one which I can transport between US and Europe without
need to use a voltage adapter.

I've seen the portable drives but they tend to be smaller and quite
expensive...

thanks.

USB is only designed to supply up to 0.5 Amp per connection.

So your question boils down to 'does anyone supply a harddisk /
controler combo that runs on 2.5 Watts max and yet stores at
least 250 GB and that is also decently priced ?

I think, the answer is --and will be for some time-- no!

But then, I could be wrong :-)

Adaptec sells a kit to create your own large usb hard drive:
http://tinyurl.com/obl5t Sells for about $50 and you supply the
IDE/ATA hard drive.

So whats wrong with also using a USB passthrough power cable plugged
into a second UB port? That gives you total of 1 amp.
