Hey folks:

I am just about at wits end with this. We have been
trying to get the POP3/SMTP services in Windows 2003 to
work properly. We have a Windows 2003 active directory
domain with some users. We configured the pop3 service
and assigned mailboxes to the users. When we configured
the pop3 service, it added the "custom" domains to the
SMTP interface. We have experimented with a few things
but the issue is this; Mail is not being delivered into
the pop mailboxes. Instead we get an error 5.0.0 action
failed without a status code returned as an NDR. We
thought the error might have been caused by moving the
users to a different OU, so we moved them back to the
default users OU under the domain. This seemed to fix the
issue for about 12 hours but the issue is back now. I was
wondering if anyone knew what the issue was or at least
where some documentation for this is. We have scoured MS
but are only getting the canned docs which are thin to say
the least. Any help is appreciated.

-Mike

I have the same problem. I have 4 mailboxes set up only, one domain, using
the default Users OU only to hold the users account (not that it is really r
elated, I am just saying I have an EXTREMELY BASIC setup here for testing pu
rposes). The users can sen
d email outbound without a hitch, but they get that save error "5.0.0 Action
Failed" when receiving mail. After a time I have noticed that the inbound
messages end up in ..\badmail. This truly is a vexing problem.

I found a VERY temporary way around this problem: I open up relaying to all
. Of course, my system starts grinding away as I watch the ..\queue folder
start filling up until the drive is full, as the messages come in faster tha
n they can go out. I have
tried requiring authentication to relay, but no external SMTP service knows
how.

So, in short, I too am stuck.
