Already, academic and commercial forums and projects like:

between heterogeneous systems providing virtual services. Many
computer and/or software vendors, large and small, have recently
announced specific projects or general priorities into p2p and/or

David,
You might also reference the Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing
(RM-ODP). This International Standards Organization (ISO) / International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) standard provides a series of abstractions
that are quite useful in describing various distributed processing schemes.

Thanks much, Ed. Is there an "official" website for it? I see that
http://lamswww.epfl.ch/reference/rm-odp and
http://www.lcc.uma.es/~av/RM-ODP/index-original.html both look pretty
official, and there are many others. Some look a little dated (e.g.
http://www.dstc.edu.au/Research/Pro.../standards.html has broken
gifs for me).

Past attempts to construct a "real" FAQ here for comp.distributed have
not been highly successful due to lack of consensus on the answers, but
I'll be helpful where I can. I suppose we could take the acronym FAQ
literally in its most common expansion (rather than Miya's newer
F"Answered"Q) and focus on the questions rather than the answers. So
far, though, many people seem happy with just a list of resources, some
of which are attempts at FAQs in their own right. (I especially like
the http://www.distributedcomputing.info site.)

David,
I prefer the list of resources since everyone has their own idea of what
distributed computing is and therefore what questions are of interest.

The ITU-T (http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/ used to have a free version of the
RM-ODP specifications available for electronic download. So does/did the OMG
for the CORBA specification and (which corresponds to the RM-ODP model): see
their FAQ: http://www.omg.org/gettingstarted/corbafaq.htm. I am not certain
whether the Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture
Consortium: TINA-C (www.tinac.com) specification is publicly available or
not. (It also uses the reference model) [what better place for distribut
ed
applications!!].

Another ISO/ITU-T group has gone further defining the "Enterprise Language".
It attempts to specify The "business model" for employing RM-ODP based
systems. The ITU-T recommendation is X.911.
The semantics of processes and tasking was particularly interesting to me.
Task based privileges and authorization seemed particularly appropriate.
Here is a reference to
a power point document by Brian Wood that puts all the elements in
perspective:
http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/worksem/um...304-wood02.ppt.
