There is a person posting a small flood of messages in alt.hacker using
anonymous proxies to repost messages that were marked with
"X-No-Archive" for privacy reasons, to post forgeries of other posters,
and to post messages that quote other messages and intersperse them with
random snippets of other posts in the same newsgroup (producing the kind
of babble you normally see from spammers trying to avoid filters.)

I was wondering if any of you had any information on whether there is
some way to get the people running the anonymous servers to either block
these kinds of posts (especially if they have some way to recognize the
forger/flooder) or temporarily (a few days?) block anonymous posts to
alt.hacker to get across the point that this isn't what anonymous
remailers were intended for?

Here are some sample message IDs of one repost that was done four times
in a row:

<41E6ASQ538864.4791203704@twistycreek.com>
<37b769af6761842ee296332ad463098e@pseudo.borked.net>
< 37b769af6761842ee296332ad463098e@mixmast
er.it>
<X0IONVEM38864.6539930556@twistycreek.com>

And here are the message IDs of three examples of forgeries:

<917e54f2adbb0762713d801a6fc830c9@msgid.frell.theremailer.net>
<694a275374246befe59f049ebded2114@anon.mixmaster.mixmin.net>
<fde28b96310729a3e4286fdce3593b56@anon.mixmaster.mixmin.net>

Note that the last two include examples of the random babble generated
from parts of other posts made elsewhere in the alt.hacker newsgroup.

(I should note that I find it slightly ironic that people are using
anonymous servers meant to protect the privacy of individuals to repost
messages by other people, including full headers, that were marked as
X-No-Archive to protect their privacy.)

This bonehead has harassed the people in alt.hacker in various ways for
about two years now, but he's just recently started up this new campaign
to annoy us. I've tried contacting some remailer owners in the past for
help but I've found it to be almost totally pointless (the Bananasplit
Operator has helped in the past with this guy, for which I'm very
grateful, but he's the only one. See:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt....b69e4d8812559c8 )

The somewhat simple way to recognize this guy is that he never posts any
original text of his own (at least not for about a year now,) he only
does copy-and-paste posts from other sources. So, just in case you were
worried about protecting this guy's free speech, don't, he's just being
annoying and any texts he posts are freely available elsewhere (such as
the hate speech forgeries he was doing about two months ago where he
would set the followups to the alt.hacker newsgroup. For an example see
MsgID <18974a2ecccebed584f74f3e0de18e88@msgid.frell.theremailer.net> .)

For those who would suggest simply filtering this guy, there's no way to
do that since there is no commonality between his posts that a computer
could recognize automatically other than that they all come through
anonymous remailers. Filtering him out means filtering out everyone who
uses an anonymous remailer. Besides filtering that out doesn't really
solve the problem.

Any assistance anyone can offer would be appreciated, and I'd be willing
to answer any questions for people who need more information on the
situation.

Thank you.

By posting to Usenet, everyone, X-N-A or not, should realize that their
posts are then forever in the public domain and probably have been archived
on thousands of machines worldwide. It's a useless exercise meant to make
one feel all warm, fuzzy and un-googled, but that's about it.

Unless the culprit is a complete dunce, there is no way to identify the
source.

In some cases, remailer operators will block acess to groups based solely on
their own discretion. It never hurts to contact the operators privately and
politely explain the situation, but you might not get your satisfaction. It
just depends on what the abuse is and whether that particular operator deems
that as abuse.

The intended use of remailers is moot. Operators run them of their own good
will for whatever use the public intends. The operators (the majority of
them anyway) rarely pass judgement on the traffic. This is good.

I lurk in alt.hacker all the time. You all are a fairly intelligent bunch,
and I know I can spot your culprit a mile away without a killfile. You can
too.

Just ignore the shit.

Good luck, but you really don't have it that bad in my opinion.

Nice self portrait, by the way.

Since after a few months much of it is dropped and most are unsearchable
by the rest of the world, then that enough for them.

I don't care about it myself, I actually like a record of my posts, but
to flood a group with reposts simply to annoy people is pure
childishness.

I wan't talking about _identifying_ the source, merely _recognizing_ it
so it could be blocked.

Thanks, but from my point of view that's just being lazy. Why put up
with the shit if there's actually something I could do about it?

Sure, things could be worse, but that is hardly a good reason to stand
by and let it happen if there is any way to stop it or slow it down.

Thanks again.

I've temporarily blocked alt.hacker from Banana, hopefully the "Problem"
will get bored and move on in a few weeks. Either that or the dawning
of adulthood will cause it to reconsider.

Wow, thanks for that response.

"to get across what the point of what anonymous remailers were intended
for" and you insert a troll response into it. If the first post didnt make
the point, you certainly did.

oh, I don't know; he overwrote existing text. a really well-done portrait
would have left all the text intact. I think that's just a copy-paste job.

Thanks.

However, he's still at it with over a dozen new forgeries plus a bunch
of other crap since my original post in this thread.

I don't think puberty is going to solve anything for this guy, though if
he acts like this on Usenet perhaps he's bad enough in real life that
his family will see to getting him properly medicated so he isn't such a
burden on society.  ;-)

I wonder why the sudden rush back. Did school let out somewhere? Or is this
maybe just the long weekend holiday that is happening in the US?
