Info about eva 8000 / emc ns502 |

Ciao,
we are going to consolidate our 2 msa 1000 and a scsi disk enclosure in 1
new disk storage.
At this moment we have 2 srv w2000 cluster for file sharing on hp msa1000
(about 2Tb) , sql dbase (cluster) on the second msa and an exchange 2003
with about 1000 mbx (i would like to move the dbase on the new device)
Our supplier offers us 2 different solution both starting with 4 Tb "space"
- emc ns502 (i think is a nas that can also work as a San)
- hp eva 8000
For me is very difficoult to compare the devices;Do you know where can i
found info to compare the different solution ?
Can you help me writing your opinion or experience about the above
devices, management sw,management facility, hp or emc support, etc?
Other (confused) info:
now we are working with dl380 but , in the next months we would like to move
to hp blade server,
Thank for your help
Rob

EVA8000 info: http://www.hp.com/go/eva8000
For 4TB of usable storage, an 8000 is overkill - there are less
expensive models in the EVA line that can give you that much. The
EVA4000 scales up to 28TB (raw) across 56 spindles although you won't
want to use the FATA drives for Exchange or SQL. Figure 300GB FC
drives and you'll probably get close to 10TB usable storage in a VRAID5
configuration (which is how we configure our Oracle and SQL databases).

We have 6 EVAs at work including EVA3000, 5000, and 8000. In general,
they all work well and are relatively easy to manage. We have been an
EMC customer in the past (Symmetrix). Both have hardware problems and
I've had issues escalated to Engineering firms at both companies. If
you want horror stories, you'll get them from customers of both. If
you want success stories, you'll get them from both.
HP support is definitely inferior to EMC's support. HP's call-home
functionality sucks whereas EMC never failed us (I've heard from other
people that they've had issues with EMC's call-home). HP's tools
regularly fail to log critical events but will continue to log really
old events. Both HP and EMC have good hardware techs - I haven't seen
issues with either one locally. HP support, however, is less expensive
than EMC's support so it is a question of you get what you pay for.

We have not yet connected our blades to the EVA but have DL380 systems
running both Windows and Linux that are connected as well as a bunch of
other ProLiant models.
These are my personal opinions, not those of my employer...

Rob,
These are two completely different solutions and you shouldn't be trying to
compare the two at all. Your "supplier" is not providing an apples to apples
option.
For what you are looking to do, I would suggest looking at SAN solution,
not a NAS solution. A previous contributor mentioned that the EVA4K looks to
be a better fit for your needs and I agree. If you're also looking at the
EMC line, the new CX3-20 is the right fit for this as well. The new CX3-XX
line is full 4GB FC end-to-end and offers excellent scalability, up to 120
drives! The EVA is easier to manage and to create LUNs etc but the EMC is
the cutting edge technology on a robust, proven architecture. This is the
seventh generation of Clariions and the Flare OS is I believe the 9
generation.
Ask for a quote for a EMC CX3-20. Specify that you want the 4TB in the 73GB
and 146GB 4GB drives. Go for two basic switches such as the DS-220B that
provide 8X 4GB ports but can expand to 12 or 16 4GB ports later. Also,
don't forget the 4GB HBA's for your servers. Lastly, you may want to ask for
a SOW for data migration as well.
I have sold several of the HP Blade enclosures as well as the above gear.
There is a break even point on whether to purchase rack mounted servers or
blades and that is at six to eight servers. Blades bring some great features
to the table but they are not for everyone.

Hi ,
Its true, CLAriion CX3-20 is a good option, also u can use a IP
connectivity in the latest version of CLARiiON which are iSCSI based
like CX300i or CX500i which can consederabliy reduce the cost of fiber
connectivity and with introduction the gigabit Ethernet technology u
can use and manage it more efficiently and can also have a cheaper
options for scalability
