Hi All,

I've been doing some roughs using a chroma screen. I've got pretty
good results with some Q&D attempts w/ FMS2, but I'm curious if
they're working elsewhere. Here's the URLs.

http://poobah.hartford.edu/flashcom...usb/iitusb.html

Remember--these are ROUGHs....

Thanks,
Bill

Jake,

Thanks. In some earlier tests, some folks from Francs were having
problems, and I just wanted to check whether it was ok elsewhere. In
the meantime, I've been wrestling with Godzilla on a green screen ; > )

nice work Bill. I like the birds in the background, nice touch ;)

The only thing I would suggest would be to choke the matte just a tad more
and maybe blur it a smidge. Or maybe just desaturate the edge of the green.

Hey Graeme,

Your early parody of the MM scene was an inspiration. I'm surprised
birds in the background was the only thing -- jets flying over, dog
barking, and cars passing by all may have added to the mix.

1. Choke the matte? What is that? Does that mean pull the chroma
sheet tighter?
2. How do I blur the matte or desaturate the edge?

All of this is pretty new to me, and I'll take all the advice I can get.

I'm going to be shooting the real things in a real studio with good
lighting and good chroma. (My lighting system seems to over-do it; so
I'm going to have to use reflectors--right now my best lighting comes
from opening the blinds over the windows.)

Right now I'm getting used to using Adobe Premier, Ultra 2, and Final
Cut Express along with a special effects and a couple of sound
programs. I've been concentrating so much on using FMS 2 for a many-
way communication tool that I've overlooked a lot of the video
possibilities. Also, using cue points is sort of fun...

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

Thanks Bill, I'm glad you liked it :D

The sounds themselves can be taken out if you can get a lapel mic or perhaps
even get a mic that you can setup just above your head. Point it down
because you'll get less ambient noise that way. Perhaps even turn the mic
level down a bit instead of leaving it at the automatic setting. It can be
in the scene because you are keying out everything but you anyways, so get
it close. It's a simple fix even for "rough stuff".

The matte is the part that is covering you in the software that you are
using. Everything but the green stuff really. Anything not covered by the
matte is transparent. When you "choke" the matte, you are in essence just
cutting it in a few pixels, when you then blur it a bit, you can "blur the
line" between you and the transparency. Sometimes it works really well,
sometimes it doesn't.. I've seen some where people are starting to look a
bit ethereal.. not so good.

You can usually blur or desaturate (take the green colour out) the edge with
the software you are using. I use After Effects, so I'm not quite sure what
it is called in Final Cut. It should be in the settings for when you are
doing the key. In After Effects this tool is also called the Spill
Suppresor.

I hope that helps a bit.

Don't get me wrong though, all in all your key is done quite well.

Graeme
