I've got an HP SureStore DLT 80 but no backup software. I was
wondering if there are any free backup apps that would work with this
device (under XP) that anyone knows about (I'm on a really tight
budget and can't spend much on a professional solution and this is for
home use, not business). A google search didn't turn up much that
would work with tape (at lease none that I found).

Try the backup tool that's bundled with Windows.
