Backup Software Recommendations |
 |
 |
|
|
06-08-06 06:14 AM
Hi folks,
I'm sick and tired of downloading, installing and trying backup software to
find out that most don't cover my needs.
So i'll just list what I need and hopefully someone will suggest somethign
that works right out of the box.
Setup:
- Scheme is one weekly full backup on fridays and incrementals the rest of
the week.
- 8 Gigs of data. Most of it is Word, Excel and database files
- Box is WinNT 4.0 sp6a
- Source is local drives
- Destination is FTP server. We have unlimited upload/download. Server is
located in same city.
Requirements:
- Based on job definitions
- Backup opened files
- Flexible naming of archived files
- Scheduling
- Compression. Spanned ZIPs or other method.
- Encryption
- Preserve path info
- Preserve file and folder attributes
- Preserve file and folder security (permissions, share....)
- In-application logs. Not text files that I have to open from the
application dir.
- Email notification
- Archive bit reset
- Job history, catalog...something <g>
- Easy restore. Please no COPY... TO... DOS commands to reconstruct
spanned zip files !!!!!
- Under $400.00
The closest I came to is with GenieSoft Backup Pro 6, but it's crashing for
no apparent reason and their support is having a hard time helping me. For
example, they tell me to download a new version of the FAM software, but it
won't run on NT. I did send them the error logs wich clearly states which
Win version this is running on. Also, I always have to reboot each time I
install/uninstall the app. This is on a SERVER that PEOPLE are using ! I
can't just reboot anytime !
Sorry for the little venting <g>
Hope someone comes forward with some suggestions.
Thanks !
Steph

Backup4all (direct dld, about 8MB):
http://www.backup4all.com/download/setup/b4asetup.exe
Covers all your requirements with a small mention for the "in-application
logs" - has an option in its menu to see the logs, but that opens the text
file directly.
You can go through the features before downloading at:

To backup open files, you must use an image-based, not a file-based,
program.
Not to mention that image based backup is umpteen times faster than file
based backup.

I don't really agree with that. Backup4all is a file based backup program
that uses the Volume Shadow Copy service to backup files that are in-use
(i.e backing up the .pst file when Outlook is running). And since he wants
to "Backup opened files" (aka word, excel...when those programs are running)
not the entire hard drive (with the system files and all) than a file-based
program will do the job too.

Hi,
I did try Backup4All, but I was getting errors when files were being added
to the temp zip file.
I'll retry and let you know exactly what those are.
Thanks,
Steph

That would require at least Windows XPl and I believe te poster is usin NT.
File based backup is still too slow.
And, even if Backup4all used its own zip algorithms to avoid the problem I
raised in
http://www.standards.com/index.html?CreateFileFailure, unizp programs, that
do not
handle the problem, may fail to unzip such files.

Could you please suggest an image based backup software ?
Thanks,

Ok the problem wasn't what I thought it was.
As a test, I limited the ZIP files to 100 MB. That created about a dozen
ZIPs. But only one gets uploaded and then the progress bar doesn't progress
anymore and the app just sits there until I kill the job. IOW, it dies
after uploading the first ZIP file.
I manually uploaded a couple of files to the FTP server without any
problems.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Steph

Seems there was a problem with the uploading, but we would need more
information to analyze this. If you still have Backup4all installed, it
would help us if you could send the last backup log to support (at)
backup4all.com. In order to open the backup log you have to select
View->Item logs->Last backup log from Backup4all's main menu. Thank you.

See
file:///M:/HKFiles-M/Forums/Hardware%20Guys/Is%20TI%20better%20than%20Ghost%
20Here's%20why%20I%20think%20so.htm.
I do not have windoze XP, so I cannot check out th enew Norton Save and
Restore, essentially Ghost modifie to compete directly with True Image.
However, if Save and REstore did not correct the incremental update issue I
mentioned in th bove posting, I'd still prefer TI.
Also, Acronis has a support forum, Symantec does not.
