Upgrading to FP SE 2002 on WinNT, IIS 4

I'm attempting to install FP SE 2002 on our WinNT box for one domain that we
host. We host about a hundred domains total on this server, and while I
don't care if they all get the 2002 upgrade (only about half a dozen use FP
at all, and just this one is using FP 2002).

I installed the FP2002SE exe, but web page it tried to open (I'm assuming a
config/management page) after installation could not be found.

When I attempt to Upgrade to 2002 Extensions in IIS, a page is launched
going to:
http://(machine
name):4424/fpadmdll.dll?page=newservr.htm&port=LM/W3SVC/66&frport=(url
encoded domain name)

This doesn't work, I get a "Page cannot be displayed" error. If I change the
"machine name" to the actual IP of the machine, I get the same error. If I
then change the IP to the domain I'm attempting to set up, I get prompted
for a user/pass, which I fill out w/ the Admin info. When I submit it, I get
the same page cannot be displayed error.

I have attempted to open the MS SharePoint Administrator, but it also
attempts to open a webpage (http://(machine name):4424/fpadmdll.dll) that
cannot be found, no matter if I change the machine name to the IP or not.

I have uninstalled FP2kSE twice & re-installed them, rebooting both times. I
can't find anything worthwhile on MS' site, and searching newsgroups has
found me nothing that resulted in a fix.

I can launch FPMMC, and I see FrontPage Server Extensions -> (machine name),
but there's nothing in there to do other than Check Server Extensions, and
that just 'tightens up security.'

I'm really frustrated and feeling particularly dumb. I hope someone can
help?

Thanks,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

Page cannot be displayed is the main error that comes up. What is the
specifc HTTP error number and what is the exact error displayed at the
bottom of the page? [Note: Disable Show friendly error messages in
IE->Tools->Internet Options->Advanced tab].

Also ensure that the _vti_bin folder in IIS has Application Execute
permissions set to "Scripts and Executables".

Regards,
Vijay

Hi Vijay, thanks so much for getting back to me.

If I disable the Friendly Error Messages and simply click on the "Upgrade
Server Extensions," I get back the error message: "Cannot find server or DNS
Error"

If I change the url from "http://(machine name):4424/fpadmdll.dll(etc)" to
"http://(server ip addy):4424/fpadmdll.dll(etc)", the User/Pass login pops
up, and when I input the admin id/pass, the page just loads and loads and
doesn't do anything - I gave it 10 full minutes, but nothing loaded.

Again, let me know whatever information I can provide. Any and all help is
appreciated.
Thanks,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

Try the following and let me know the results:

1. browse to http://myfpseconfiguredserver/_vti_...dm/fpadmdll.dll
2. goto command prompt, change to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\web server extensions\50\bin
and run "owsadm -o check -p 80" [NOTE: This will reset permissions that
would have been manually set on the NTFS partition].

Regards,
Vijay

(I don't know what directory it's trying to point to there - that doesn't

Again, thank you for your help. I'm going out of my mind here...

Hi Shawn,

Doesn't look like FPSE is configured on the Web site!
In IIS, under the default web site check if we have a _vti_bin virtual
directory point to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web
Server Extensions\50\isapi.
Next if you browse into _Vti_bin, you must find _vti_adm and then a
fpadmdll.dll file.

If these do not exist, then the installation has not happened correctly.

If this is the case, then rerun the FPSE install program, it will ask you
to repair or uninstall, select uninstall, then reboot and then reinstall.

Regards,
Vijay
