In order to further test my mail2news code I am making available my
mail2news@bigappleremailer.com gateway for testing. Just use this
gateway as you would any other. It will not be available 24/7, but
rather till ~11PM EDT today only, after which I will decide on future
testing/uptime. Posting limits are 3 groups and 32KB. There is also a
slightly updated version of the program at http://bigapple.yi.org:888/mail2news.zi
p.
If you download it, be sure to check the readme file for an important .ini
file change.

Enjoy.

The logging of the ini settings at the terminal is a great help - I've been
running several instances simultaneously each pointing to different servers
and it's been difficult to differentiate them.

I've been wondering how it performs under load, except that I really have no
idea what a good sized load for a mail2news is. In your (and anybody
else's) experience, is there some sort of number in messages per minute
which indicates a mail2news is getting pounded?

If I ever decide the best way to run it safely, maybe I'll get the nads to
run it publicly. Seems a mail2news really sticks your neck out.

If you get to a point at which you want to choose between the
mail2news@bigappleremailer.com and newsgroup @bigapple.yi.org formats, I
hope you stick with the latter. It's handy for certain things (or run 'em
both ways).

I figured that would be helpful, which is why I added it.

None that I'm aware of. It likely depends on your ISP/NSP and your
available bandwidth. The code does pause for 1 second between postings
to insure you're not putting too much of a load on any of the servers
you're using, both POP and NNTP.

It does to some extent, but having an ISP with nads helps too.

I don't plan on changing the newsgroup@bigapple, but I haven't decided
if I'll run the mail2news full-time. As I've said before, I'm hoping that
some other people will run it, as I already run my share of services.

Thanks for the feedback.

Is there any way to overcome the limitation of not having spaces in the
NNTPComplain & NNTPOrg fields? If I went public I'd like to be a little
more detailed in these messages,
 and_inserting_this_in_the_headers_looks_
kind_of_tacky.
Not a big deal, just wondering why there's such a limitation.

Thanks.

No there isn't, but I'll give it some thought. It's like that because of the
way I parse the .ini file and allow the freeform comments. If you look at th
e
headers from most remailers you'll see that for the most part there are no
spaces in those headers.

I haven't tried this, but you might get away with using Alt-255 instead of
a space. You just hold down the Alt key and type 255 on the numeric keypad,
which shows up as a space. Not sure what it would come out as on the upstrea
m
though.

Can you think of any more features you'd like to see in the program?
I've thought about adding a killfile for certain user names or email
addresses that you might not want to allow to use the gateway.

I call Bullshit. Every message that comes out of a remailer has headers
with spaces in them. Subject, Comment, Organization, Date, References
most of the time, etc. It's probably factual to say that most headers do
have spaces in them.

The problem is almost certainly your PowerBASIC string handling syntax,
but since we have no source code we can't be sure of that or help you
fix it.

ASCII extended character 255 doesn't even exist in the 7 bit encoding
scheme you should be sticking to. Best case the high order bit is
ignored and you end up with 0x7f or decimal 127. That's a DEL.

ASCII 32 (0x20) is a space, and it won't matter one bit whether you hit
the space bar or enter it with an ALT+, a space is a space is a space.
You need to fix your code so it realizes strings don't terminate with a
space character. Or so one has to assume.....

Jeez! Sorry. What I meant to say was that most Complaints and Organization
headers do not have spaces in them. I was not talking about the message
headers, just the .ini file layout. But, let's look at some to educate you;
Organization: mail2news@nym.alias.net
Organization: UseNetServer.com
Organization: mail2news@dizum.com
Organization: Bananasplit
Keeping in mind that these are headers that my code inserts and not headers
from the email it receives.

"I call Bullshit." is hardly an indication of a desire to help. But,
I already said I would think about the way it's handled and it's not a
problem but rather the way I wanted it to work. And, I certainly don't
need your help with coding syntax.

It was just a thought, and don't assume anything.

I find it highly amusing that attached to the very post where you make
this silly claim, we find the following headers.....

X-Complain-To: remaileradmin at optonline dot net

Organization: NewsReader.Com Subscriber

/me shrugs

Would you like to be lambasted with a whole shitload of similar
headers_with_spaces_in_them from remailers and other sources?

I didn't think so.

I suppose not, since you're inserting them.

You're disallowing spaces in free form headers (defined by RFC mind
you), and you claim you don't need help?

/me shrugs again

It was a very poor thought, indicative of someone who really doesn't
know what they're doing. A little taint of Eelbash as a matter of fact.

There's nothing to do but assume since we can't see your code. Chances
are if you had published it this problem would have been fixed already.

Too bad you missed this part of my post:

Which, if you really knew what you're talking about, would tell you
that I made that post through my remailer and not my m2n code.

We all know that your coding skill are legend and you have a towering
intellect blah blah blah, but I get the feeling that you're just jealous of
the fact that Big Apple Admin came up with a simple, ubiquitous mail2news
solution for the masses and you didn't.
