How do I deal with optional fields when mapping from XML to a Flat File?

If the field exists on the XML side great... I pull the field over... if the
field doesn't exist on the XML side I get a map error.  How do I set it so
the map will insert spaces if there isn't anything to bring over?

I have the Pad Character set to a blank for every field in my Flat File
schema.
